We Want a Smaller Power Bill

how does solar energy workMy husband and I have been curious about home solar systems and the pros and cons of solar energy.  Our electricity bills average several hundred dollars every month, and let me tell you, I am absolutely sick of paying the power company that much money.  My husband and I have three kids.  We live in a big old house in San Diego.  Over the past few years, we’ve been doing what we can to make the house more energy efficient, like putting in extra insulation, replacing the leaky windows, and sealing cracks, but there’s a limit to what we can do with an old building.  So far we’ve managed to reduce our power bill by about 25% every month, but we’d really like to get off the power grid, at least in part.

Fortunately, my husband is pretty knowledgeable about construction matters - he did most of the updates to the house himself.  He won’t be installing solar panels himself though - that is, if we decide to go ahead with that project.  We are really looking into this carefully because we want to understand the process clearly, and of course we are interested in whatever tax credits we can get.
