Responsibilities of the Maid of Honor

So your sister or friend is getting married and has chosen you as her maid of honor.  But what exactly does this mean for you?

Basically, as the maid of honor you have a lot of responsibilities, such as:

  1. Help plan the wedding, including the venue.  For example, if the bride wants a castle wedding instead of the typical Michigan weddings, it is your job to give advice and assistance when asked.
  2. Plan the bridal shower and bachelorette parties.  There are lots of celebrations leading up to the wedding, and it will be your job to plan these things for the bride.
  3. Make a wedding speech at the reception, usually after dinner when things are winding down a bit.
  4. Pamper the bride.  As the maid of honor, you are obviously the bride’s most beloved friend or sister.  Obviously you are doing something right or she wouldn’t have chosen you, but be sure to keep up the good work!

Of course, some brides turn into bridezilla as their wedding day approaches, and while as the maid of honor your responsibility is to provide planning and emotional support for the bride, there is nothing that says you have to act as a whipping post.  If the bride is becoming too abusive, let her know as kindly as you can.  Set boundaries, but be sure to offer all the comfort and support you have to give — as long as she stays without those boundaries!
