My Cool Job

I’ve been working for a FTP hosting company for five years now, and I really enjoy it. I’ve been able to do a majority of my work from home, and keep steady hours. Most days I report in at ten in the morning, and leave around seven at night. The work is pretty easy, all I need to do is make sure that the servers are up, and run maintenance scripts every couple of hours. We have a ticketing system, but that is really only for our business ftp site. That ticket system really is a complex system. If we get a new ticket, 2 emails are sent out. One email is sent to the manager, and another to the tracking queue. The queue is what I look at during the day, and is what I run specific maintenance scripts for.

If we get tickets outside of business hours, the email is sent to a pager. Currently, there are three of us that rotate the pager around. Problems don’t come in often, but they do come in. You definitely don’t want to be stuck at the theater in the middle of a movie when the pager goes off. If the problem is severe enough, we need to actually show up on site. Luckily that doesn’t happen often.
