What Causes Hair Loss?

If you have been experiencing hair loss and you want to know whether you will be a candidate for hair transplantation, you should be relieved to know that not all hair loss is chronic.  Stress, hormones, and other things can often cause you to go through a temporary period of increased shedding.

For instance, my best friend growing up said that her mom lost a lot of hair after she was born.  This was most likely due to the sudden change in hormones in her body.  In my case, I lost a lot of hair after I was diagnosed as diabetic and my blood sugar brought under control.  Since insulin is a hormone, that may have something to do with it, or it may have been related to the physical stress my body was under up until the time when I was diagnosed.

Here are a few of the main causes of hair loss:

  • Changes in hormone levels in your body, such as the changes caused by thyroid problems or postnatal hormone changes
  • Medications may cause hair loss, which will most likely go away once you stop taking the medications
  • Infections, illnesses, and stress may also cause hair loss
  • Pulling on your hair too much, such as putting it into very tight ponytails or curling it too tight, can cause hair loss where it is being pulled on
  • Damaging your hair follicles, such as with hot oil treatments and straightening chemicals, can also cause hair loss

If you can rule out one of these reasons, you may simply have “common baldness” or regular patterns of hair thinning and loss.  Not to worry — hair replacement systems provide readily available solutions that transplant your own hair to balding areas to eliminate any “weirdness” about your finished look.
