The Importance of Sunscreen

Sunlight can damage the skin with repeated exposure. The damage can occur even if you don’t actually get a sunburn. Sun can cause skin cancer and premature wrinkles. With extreme exposure, your skin can even take on a leathery appearance.
Suntan lotion is impo
rtant because it can help reduce the negative effects of the sun. Lotions with SPF offer sunburn protection. SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor and the higher the SPF, the more protection the tanning lotion provides.
Be sure to apply your suntan lotion regularly. Use plenty of lotion and reapply when you get out of the pool or ocean. If you use a tanning lotion that does not have an SPF, be sure to use it along with a lotion that does have an adequate SPF.
You may also want to consider wearing a wide brimmed hat to protect your face and scalp. Also, make sure that your children are well protected. Reapply sunscreen on your children every hour to protect their skin from burns and damage. Keep in mind that the sun is strongest from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. This is particularly true in the summer. Sunlight reflected off of the water’s surface, either from a pool or the ocean, can also contribute to skin damage by increasing your exposure to ultraviolet radiation.
