Arguments with Kids over Education

Almost as soon as your child turns five and is ready to start kindergarten, you are going to find yourself fighting with him or her about something related to school. The fighting isn’t likely to end until your child is graduated from college - and it might not even end then!

Here are some common things that parents and kids argue about when it comes to school:

  • Attendance. Kids want to skip school and their parents aren’t happy about it.
  • Homework. Kids have trouble doing it and their parents do all they can to make sure that it gets done.
  • Clothing. Unless they go to a school which requires uniforms, kids often want to wear things to school that parents don’t approve of.
  • College choices. Your kid wants to look at golf schools (golf colleges) to pursue careers in golf. As a parent, you don’t think this is a good idea.

As you can see, the battle really comes down to a battle for control of the child’s educational life. At some point, the parent does have to relinquish control so that the child can become the individual self that he or she is meant to be. There’s nothing easy about letting that happen, though, so you are likely to find that there will be more than one battle in your home over education as you try to figure it all out.

Kids of all ages just need to know their boundaries. Some parents think they should not have to explain themselves to their kids but I find that sometimes it helps to give them reasons rather than just “because I said so.”
