In the capital of the Philippines, you’ll find a city rich in over four hundred years of history. The original capital of the Spanish East Indies, known as Intramuros , began here in 1571, on the southern shores of the Pasig River. Chinese and Japanese pirates threatened the area in those times and so the Spanish built a defensive fort with high stone walls and moats, enclosing homes and churches, schools, palaces and government buildings. In those times, one could only enter the city through gates with drawbridges which were then shut tightly before midnight and not opened again until dawn.
Today, the Intramuros is a destination spot for travelers, filled with historic sites and museums. The Intramuros Administration runs the site with the intent of encouraging a sense of pride and uniqueness to Filipinos, recognizing this walled city as a cultural and heritage site well worth preserving. The area is filled with art galleries, restaurants and shops as well as museums, including the National Museum , which displays treasures retrieved from sunken Manila galleons dating back to the 1600s. The Ayala Museum, too, will also teach travelers about the history of the Philippines.
Anyone arriving at Manila hotels will encounter a rich mix of architecture, historical sites, and contemporary culture and nightlife that won’t soon be forgotten.
With a local population of less than 500 people, Hanalei is a very special place seated in a very special chain of islands. The beaches here are amazingly beautiful, enough so that the filmmakers decided to make South Pacific here in the late 1950s. It’s also been the unwitting host to Imperial Russia, and has a much longer history than humans can remember. Today, there are plenty of good reasons for visiting, ranging from the beauty of the beaches to the splendor of the hotels Hanalei offers. It’s also a place that commands a kind of respect for the environment, where the natural beauty invites careful steps, so that it can also be enjoyed by future generations.
In that spirit, then, there are places where one can purchase food and other items that speak to the spirit of the place. One of the more popular spots on the island is Papaya’s Natural Foods . One has to drive to get there, and it’s a rather remarkable series of views, which help to serve as a reminder of the place. It’s difficult to forget one is in Hanalei, however, because the natural vistas never lose their endearing shine.
Here one can enjoy their cafe, which serves natural foods, of course, with vegan as well as gluten-free offerings. Muffins and sandwiches are all made fresh here, as are fish tacos and taro burgers. These are local tastes that appeal to a wide customer base. They also have health and beauty supplies that are made from local products, further developing a deep relationship with the land. They also have a store, the original one, in Kapaa, but opened this so that more people could enjoy what they have to offer. They are also very committed to preserving the area and helping the local community. They are part of a number of initiatives, including Zero Waste Kauai , so that environmental awareness isn’t just an idea, but is put into practice.
Jacksonville, Florida is where the north flowing St. Johns River meets the Atlantic Ocean and where Northerners were lured in their search of sunshine and beach. The nightlife alone provides what anyone could possibly want and every venue offers a gorgeous view of the St. Johns River and of Jacksonville.
The Riverwalk was originally planned as a boardwalk located on the south bank of the St. Johns River with the intentions to become a venue where locals and tourists could view the beauty of the river and Jacksonville’s amazing skyline, but the original vision has surpassed itself not only by building up the northside of St. Johns River as well, but by epitomizing what Florida is all about: sunshine, water, sailboats, speedboats and divine sky-rises.
Current features include 2-Open Air Pavilions; the Ship Museum, which emphasizes the historic relationship between the city and the river and the River City Brewing Company. Plus, there are tentative future plans to add a 128-slip dock facility, which would include a new section of southbank Riverwalk on by 13 acres on the Aetna Building property, adding 1,100 additional feet of riverfrontage.
While most people associate New York City with one or more of its contemporary cultural elements, there are actually a great number of historical that are excellent places to visit and are also some of the popular tourists attractions. It’s easy to see New York in the context of its contemporary significance, though it’s important to remember that it is one of the nation’s historic cities and it played a major role in the development of this country. And this occurred on multiple levels, politically, economically and culturally. Interestingly, these are some of the same dynamics that make it the amazing global city that it is today.
Many of the historic buildings and landmarks are functioning establishments and blend in with the contemporary society of New York. This is easy to do in such a diverse architectural culture where heritage is preserved and also transformed to compliment the present. There are one hundred and eight National Historic Landmarks that the guests in Manhattans best hotels pass by and sometimes even access on a daily basis. Buildings like the Central Synagogue are so visually impressive and have such a tremendous historical feel that they stand out as major historic landmarks. The synagogue was built in the Moorish Revival style and is the oldest of its kind that has been in continuous use in the New York area.
Other buildings are obvious landmarks and serve as popular tourist attractions. This is certainly the case with the Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building. They are also prominent features in the New York skyline. Meanwhile other buildings like the City Hall, which is the oldest city hall building in the nation that is still in use as a public service facility, and the Grand Central Station, which is the largest train station the world, simply blend in to the city atmosphere. However, much like the Central Synagogue, Grace Church is another example of an awe inspiring building and you know you’re in front of a major landmark when standing in front of it. The church was designed in the style of the Gothic Revival and it was consecrated in 1846.

No one likes it when someone passes away, but we all know that it is a fact of life. Unfortunately for me, my mother passed away suddenly in her sleep. She was in good health, but had an aneurism, so the shock of her departure from this world affected everyone in our family.
Since I was named the executor of her estate, it is my responsibility to carry out the wishes of her will. It isn’t the best situation to be in because of the grief that I am feeling, but mother thought I would be up to it, so I will do it to the best of my ability.
Her will stated that everything that she owned was to be sold and the money divided between us four kids. For the most part I knew that it was going to be relatively easy, but I wasn’t too sure about my mother’s jewelry collection.
She had quite an extensive collection, and I wasn’t sure about how to sell the gold jewelry for a reasonable price. Truth be told, I had no idea what the value was of any of her jewelry.
I am going down to a store in town tomorrow to get the collection of jewelry appraised so I have an idea of what it is worth and then I’ll have to find a buyer. I didn’t realize that being an executor was going to be so much work.
Since this year has been really rough in terms of trying to sell real estate, I decided that I was going to try something different. I knew that there had to be a way for me to have my properties stand out from the crowd and entice buyers to come take a look.
But it took awhile to come up with something unique I could do that wouldn’t take a large cash investment. I was struggling enough as it is, and though I did want to be different, I didn’t want to have to end up in bankruptcy because of it.
In the end, I settled on some custom banner stands that would allow me to hang a large picture of the interior design of the home that I was selling. I thought that if the prospective buyer would get a glimpse of what they would see inside the home that I would entice them to call and make an appointment for a viewing.
As it turns out, the last half of the year saw an increase in home showings by nearly fifty percent, and the number of new homes that I sold increased over last year by ten percent even though the market was in a slump.
Needless to say, trying something different ended up being profitable for me and I am very thankful for that.
Merry Christmas to everyone! I adore the holiday season but I can’t help noticing how much waste there is at Christmas time. Trees that don’t get replanted or recycled, wrapping paper that gets thrown away after one use and other such common holiday sights make me a little bit sad.
To combat that sadness I’ve come up with a list of my green goals for the new year. I have many small goals that I want to accomplish in 2010 but there are two major green goals that I am aiming to make sure really happen this year:
Compost! I kept saying all year long that I was going to compost. I waste way more food than I should. I tend to over-purchase produce and then have to get rid of it. I’m trying to get better about that but at least if I compost it won’t completely go to waste.
Get my LEED certification. I want to do LEED training early this year so that I can get my LEED certification. I really want to get better at implementing green business practices in my small business and these classes would teach me how to do that.
I am enjoying Christmas but I also think it’s a good time to set some green goals for next year since it’s such a wasteful holiday. What do you think about this?
Many people are suffering from hearing loss and do not even realize it. If you catch the problem early on then you can get help from an audiologist to diminish the impact that it has on you.
Here are five signs that you might have a hearing problem:
You regularly ask people to repeat what they are saying. If you find yourself constantly asking “what?” when you are speaking to people then you might be losing your hearing.
People frequently tell you that the music or television that you are listening to is too loud. If people turn the TV on and the volume you had it on last makes them cringe but you think it’s a normal volume then you might have a hearing problem.
Get weird looks when you say things. You might be mis-hearing what’s being said and therefore responding inappropriately.
Experience pain or ringing in your ears. This isn’t normal so get it checked out!
You catch yourself reading hearing aid reviews or news. If you find yourself looking up stuff about hearing loss then your subconscious mind may be telling you that there’s a problem that needs to be checked out.
If you think you have a hearing problem then make an appointment with an audiologist to find out what’s going on.
